Quiet medieval villages in the Luberon, Provence
From the castle on top of a rocky outcrop, Menerbes watches over neighboring Gordes and Roussillon, both listed among the most Beautiful Villages of France. Inside the village walls, the streets reveal a rich heritage and 16th and 17th century architecture. Like many villages of the Luberon, Menerbes seduced several famous artists and writers, including Picasso and, more recently, Peter Mayle, who wrote A Year on Provence.
Three miles away, Oppède, a quiet, ancient village, with cobbled paths and ivy-covered stone buildings, houses two churches and the ruins of a castle, providing excellent views of the Luber-on valley.
There is a bakery in each of the villages.
Oppède has a small morning market on Saturday mornings.
Menèrbes has a small market on Thursday mornings.
For larger outdoor markets, venture to Coustellet, 8 km away, on Sunday mornings or to Apt on Saturday mornings.
Please note that most restaurants in Provence do not open until 7:30 in the evening. Reservations are needed in the high season, especially for groups.
There are several great choices for restaurants. Review the choices here for Menèrbes and here for Oppède
Note that many grocery stores are closed Sundays and Monday, or have limited hours on the weekends.
In Menerbes there is a small store: Ave Marcellin Poncet. (Closed Sunday afternoons and Monday)
Larger supermarket: Super U in Coustellet is 10km from Goult, closed Sunday afternoons
Most wineries are closed on Sunday and during lunch hour.
