In the heart of the Alpilles mountains, set atop a rocky outcrop, Les Baux is crowned by historical castle ruins which overlook the plains to the south. les Baux is known to be one of the most beautiful villages in France. Its name refers to its site: in Provençal, a bauç is a rocky spur.

With its architectural heritage, beautiful landscapes and Provencal traditions, Les Baux is a delightful village to experience.

Though the village can be quite touristy and is only accessible by foot, it is very pleasant in the summer for a morning or late afternoon visit.

There is no weekly market in Les Baux. The closest market is in Mausanne les Alpilles (4,5 Km away) every Thursday morning.

Restaurants

Please note that most restaurants in Provence do not open until 7:30 in the evening. Reservations are needed in the high season, especially for groups.

The castle
It covers an area of 7 hectares and is one of the most impressive locations in France. When visiting, you will discover breathtaking panoramic views of Provence landscapes all the way to Aix, Arles and beyond. Discover the history of the Lords of Les Baux and their mediaeval fortress, the Sarrazine and Paravelle Towers, the dovecote, the castle chapel and the Chapel of St. Blaise, the former Quiqueran Hospital and much more.

In the heart of Alpilles, the monumental “Carrières de Lumières” in Les Baux de Provence host extraordinary multimedia shows which are unique in the world.
